Curbless Bathroom – A Tribute to Ratan Tata

Curbless Bathroom is a project by Marietta Morris, a student of Diploma in Interior Design September 2022 at JD Institute of Fashion Technology, Bengaluru for JD Design Awards 2023. The concept is for senior citizen bathrooms that pays tribute to Ratan Tata while empathizing with the unique needs of the elderly. Drawing inspiration from the business tycoon’s philanthropic efforts and commitment to social causes, the design approach focuses on empathy, safety, accessibility, and comfort. Understanding the importance of addressing the specific challenges faced by senior citizens, the young interior designer prioritizes accessibility by incorporating features such as grab bars, wider doorways, and lever handles for easy operation. Safety is paramount, and hence there is utilization of slip-resistant materials and textured flooring to minimize the risk of falls. Comfort is a key consideration in the design, thus includes adjustable showerheads, built-in seating areas, and soft lighting to create a soothing and relaxing atmosphere. Prioritization has been given to ease of movement by offering open floor plans and wider clearances to accommodate mobility devices and ensure smooth navigation. To enhance independence and convenience for senior users, there is integration of assistive technology such as motion-sensor lighting and voice-activated controls for a seamless and user-friendly experience. Aesthetics have not been compromised in the design. There is a combination of soft colour palettes, warm tones, and natural materials to create a visually pleasing environment that promotes well-being and dignity. Every detail is thoughtfully considered. There is an installation of handrails, ample storage, and ergonomic fixtures to cater to the unique needs of seniors. Privacy is valued to ensure a comfortable and dignified experience. The curbless bathroom is a space that is safe, accessible, and comfortable, addressing the specific challenges faced by seniors while promoting their well-being and dignity.
