Lacrimosa: A Tribute to Balance Between Grief and Recovery

Lacrimosa was designed by Deepvanshika Srivastava and Ritika Soni, students of BSc. in Fashion and Apparel Design at JD School of Design powered by JD Institute of Fashion Technology, Bengaluru for JD Design Awards 2023. The collection was created in honour of those who have lost their lives along the way. The young fashion designers attempted to portray balance between grief and recovery. They represented the subject with the incorporation of various elements and colours in the garments. Lacrimosa, is a Latin term for, ‘weeping or tearful.’ It is also a name that is derived from Our Lady of Sorrows, a title given to The Virgin Mary which is part of the Dies Irae sequence in the Roman Catholic Requiem Mass. Its text comes from the Latin 18th and 19th stanzas of the sequence. Many composers, including Mozart, Berlioz, and Verdi have set the text as a discrete movement of the Requiem. It is critical to understand that grief is an aspect of loss, but it is not the sole aspect. People must be strong and move forward with their lives. There will be memories of their loved ones; hence memories of them must be cherished and one must learn to move forward with them. It’s not always the sad ones, sometimes while celebrating one is reminded of how their loved ones were or what they would do, and puts a smile one’s face. So, in order to honour those memories, it is critical to understand the importance of maintaining a balance between grief and recovery.

The collection won the Most Riveting Collection Award.
