Pudhupippu: A Tribute to Bhavani Jamakalam

Pudhupippu, designed by Nageswari R and Sumaya Kutubuddeen Mulla, students of Diploma in Fashion Design March 2022 from JD Institute of Fashion Technology, Bengaluru for JD Design Awards. Through their Pret-a-Porter Outerwear Collection for men and women, the young fashion designers paid tribute to Bhavani Jamakalam.

Tightly knit from coarse cotton yarn in vivid colours of red, blue, green, white, orange and yellow the Jamakkalam Handicraft of Tamil Nadu goes back about two centuries and is now on shaky ground, seeming to be losing its relevance in today’s modern world. High on utilitarian value, the actual woven carpets are being used mainly as prayer mats, dining mats and seating mats at social gatherings. The power looms are providing tough competition to the local weavers, and the actual product is being adversely affected.

Pudhupippu paid ode to this beautiful but simple craft. Through their collection they were trying to make an effort to increase the handicraft’s visibility and market share.

The collection won the Best Executed Collection Award.
