Evolution of furniture has been an evident one, not in the perspective of design, but also as per their use. Furniture is defined as the moveable products that make a particular space suitable to live or work in. They are from different sizes and shapes, depending on their final use.
Evolution Of Furniture: Chairs have evolved not just in the uses and requirements but also in their designs.
The students of Bsc. Interior Designing, 2020 batch A and B, organised a display for ‘The Evolution Of Furniture’. Each student made a visual presentation on paper, about one particular furniture and its evolution since ancient times. The students, although they had their presentation handmade, presented it beautifully. A total of 37 students took part in the display. Before looking into what and how the students went about the display, let’s look at what furniture is and the significance of it in interior designing:
What Is A Furniture?
Furniture can be defined as a movable object that supports humans in various activities such as seating and sleeping (the most common activities). Apart from this, they are also used to holding or supporting other objects at convenient heights or store them. There are various materials used to make furniture, from metals and plastic to wood and reused materials as well.

Furniture was first made using natural materials such as tree stumps, rocks, moss, and so on. The use of furniture back during the first civilization was used for lights and lamps, and was later evolved to be used to sit and sleep.
Significance Of Furnitures In Interior Designing
Mainly, furniture is used to fill any extra negative space when designing a room or particular space. Other than this reason, there are other reasons as to why furniture plays a significant role when it comes to interior designing.
1. Addition Of Charm
The most basic aim of interior designing is to add features, probability, and warmth to the house. The wide range of furnitures are assorted as per their use, which help in choosing as per the requirements of the room and space of the design.
2. Complete Furnishing
The addition of furniture will complete the look and feel of the house. The wide range and assortment of the furniture, classifies the significance to the home and the space with the right style. Adding the right furniture will add the right mode and vibe to the home.
3. Comfort Factor
Furniture is an essential element in the house as it provides comfort and makes day to day life simpler and easier. Comfort is a crucial part, as it helps in rejuvenation after a tiring day. Having the right furniture in the right places in a space will provide the essential need for comfort to the client.
4. Utility For A Reason
The unlimited range of furniture classification is quite influential when looking for useful and comfortable furniture. Every piece of furniture is chosen on the basis of its use and requirement. For instance, tables range from coffee table to bed side tables, they all provide various utilizations and purposes. Similarly, when it comes to chairs and beds extending from armchair, office chair, dining chairs, sofa cum bed, king and queen side bed, so on and so forth.
5. Visual Weight
The weight of a piece of furniture determines its placement around the house. The physical appearance, such as the height and size of the furniture will also help in understanding the look and feel of the space that it is being planned to keep in.
These are some of the features of the significance of furniture in interior designing. Keeping this in mind, students of the Interior designing department put together a handmade presentation of the evolution of furniture from the ancient times of Greece, upto how they are being designed and used today.

Students presented their work by creating a script book, a flow chart, a fold book, scrapbook, etc. Although they were restricted from using technology and devices, they did not see it as a limitation. They creatively used paper and their illustration skills to bring out the best in their display.

The display took place at JD Institute, Brigade Road Campus between 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The event was opened to all students and faculties, irrespective of their departments. Each evolution was beautifully explained to the audience, with reference to their presentation.

Evolution of furniture, their design and uses is a never ending process, and will continue to change in the coming years. At JD Institute, the students are taught to keep the interest of the environment in mind when curating new designs. As the design industry is moving onwards to an eco-friendly and greener approach of satisfying human needs and requirements, the JEDIIANS are being educated to curate products using all natural materials.
