Interior design means having full control over the experience created in a space that could potentially affect a person’s mood and life. Interior designing establishes the function of space: the look, feel, and how it can appease the senses. There is a responsibility in creating interior design styles in that they should align with the inhabitant’s lifestyle choices, culture, social background and needs.

Well-being, creativity and happiness are affected by any space. Therefore, creating something that can touch the senses is nothing short of brilliance. Here’s your chance to create spaces that will be etched in people’s minds.

What is Interior Design Like as a Profession?

Interior decoration design requires discipline and skill. The designer must obtain professional training and hone their global and conceptual project development skills. An interior designer must know how to work with different elements and details, such as lighting and horizontal and vertical surfaces.

Designing all the details in an inhabitable space with intention and purpose is crucial. Will the space be used to eat, sleep or work? A space meant to dine in is much different from one used for work. So with that in mind, four elements must be taken into account.

  • Lighting: It sets the tone and mood. Lighting helps achieve the purpose of a room.
  • Acoustics: The acoustics of a bathroom significantly differ from a dining room. Therefore, the acoustics must fit with the type of activities intended for a room.
  • Colour: Colour theory is the art of science of utilizing colour. It influences the emotions felt in space. Blue and purple, for example, are used to gain a sense of calm and trust. Yellow and red are happy and energetic.
  • Positioning and Surroundings: You must have a vision for each zone.

There are overlapping concepts between interior design and house staging because they are based on the same school of thought. Yet, the two terms are not interchangeable. The purpose or end goal is the first fundamental distinction between interior design and home staging.

Audience

The intended audience is one of the most crucial differences between interior design and house staging. Home staging interior design aims to attract as many prospective purchasers as possible. On the other hand, interior design caters to a person’s or family’s unique aesthetics.

For example, a home stager will use neutral paint colours to appeal to more buyers and accentuate the home’s strengths. However, an interior designer might suggest a child’s bedroom with colourful, bold wallpaper to customize their cosy place.

Decision Maker

Who determines the design decisions differs significantly between interior design and professional house interior staging. An interior designer adheres to the homeowner’s ultimate decisions, while a professional stager makes the final decision regarding home staging.

A home stager, for instance, would swap out an outdated recliner for newer, more contemporary furnishings that would appeal to buyer aspirations. If the homeowner insists on keeping the recliner, an interior designer will accommodate it into the overall design.
