Lateral entry is a privilege or honor offered to polytechnic students to join the second year of undergraduate education directly after the completion of a 3 year government polytechnic diploma program corresponding to their field of study.  The 3-year government polytechnic diploma course is equivalent to two semesters or the first year of an undergraduate program.

While this is the normal code of admission into a course, a student under the lateral entry code of admission is directly promoted to the second year of a course based on the certificates he provides corroborating the completion of a 3 year government polytechnic diploma course.
