Can a hairstylist be a makeup artist

You have a passion for styling hair and want to become a professional hairstylist. You also have a deep love for makeup and like to experiment with new looks by using different cosmetics. Which one should you choose? Or, can you combine both and work as a hairstylist-cum-makeup artist? Is there a course that single-handedly guides in both of these areas? Let us answer your questions and give you more details on being a hairstylist, a makeup artist or both at the same time.

HAIRSTYLIST VS MAKEUP ARTIST: WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES?

A hairstylist styles and works on hair while a makeup artist uses cosmetics and applies makeup and/or prosthetics on the face and/or body. This is the obvious difference between the two professions. Apart

from this, a few other differences are as follows:

  • Tools used: A hairstylist uses tools like curling irons and wands, blow dryers, steamers while a makeup artist uses makeup brushes and sponges, cosmetics, cleansers, cleaners, etc. The main difference would be that some of the tools used by a hairstylist are often heavy (steamers) and hence, a hairstylist may not be able to carry them everywhere. A makeup artist uses smaller tools which can be easily carried around irrespective of the location where they will provide the service.

    • Different types of customers: Though a makeup artist and a hairstylist will have the same type of customers but there are certain differences to be more specific. A makeup artist will mostly get customers who want to get ready for an event like a wedding. A hairstylist will get customers who are getting ready for an event or customers who want some styling or treatment on a regular day.
    • Location of service: Generally, a hairstylist works in a salon or a beauty studio while a makeup artist works in a makeup store. Both of them can also work in other types of settings like clinics, fashion shoots, production sets for movies, television shows and theatre.
CAN A HAIRSTYLIST BE A MAKEUP ARTIST AND VICE VERSA?

Yes, you can be. Hairstyling and makeup artistry are closely associated and complement each other. If you desire to become a hair and makeup artist, then you will have to acquire skillsets in both fields. As they are almost similar, learning one when you already have decent knowledge or experience of the other will be an easy task.

HOW CAN I ACQUIRE SKILLS IN BOTH FIELDS?

By learning and experimenting. A makeup artist course may or may not include lessons on hair styling. Similarly, a hairstylist course may not include lessons on makeup. On the other hand, most courses will be a package of makeup and hair styling. If you are someone who wants to master both the arts, then we advise you to sign up for such a course. It will prepare you to become the two-in-one professional that you are seeking to become. JD Institute of Fashion Technology offers a diploma in make-up and hairstyle artistry which will enable you to learn all the required skills and techniques and practice makeup and hair professionally. If you already have a diploma in one of the fields and want to learn the other, then gain industry exposure from industry experts through seminars, internships and workshops. You can also sign up for a beauty parlour course under leading stylists to gain more insight practically.
