Mellifluous: A Tribute to Beethoven

Mellifluous was a project by B Charishma Herschal, Hrushika I G and Mohamed Suhail N, students of BSc. in Fashion and Apparel Design at JD School of Design powered by JD Institute of Fashion Technology, Bengaluru for JD Design Awards 2023. Widely regarded as the greatest composer who ever lived, Ludwig Van Beethoven dominates a period of musical history as there has been no one else before or since his time. His personal life was marked by a heroic struggle against encroaching deafness, and some of his most important works were composed during the last 10 years of his life. In musical form, he was a considerable innovator, widening the scope of sonata, symphony, concerto, and quartered, while with the ‘Ninth Symphony’, he combined the works of vocal and instrumental music in a manner never attempted before. Beethoven expressed himself through his compositions and was a person who lived a quite dull life, filled with trauma from his childhood and hopeless romantic incidences. His music is known for its abrupt highs and lows (quite resembling his life) and the young fashion designers incorporated that through a variety of fabric manipulation and impromptu arrangement. His music was a combination of structured compositions with a flow filled pattern and this is seen in the silhouettes and choice of fabrics. Lastly, Beethoven and his life was not a bright sunshine, walk in the park and he was known to be a person who was socially unavailable and had absolutely no care for how he presented himself in terms of clothing and action and hence, the designers chose a muted and a darker colour palette to represent his life. The collection is a dedication to Beethoven as a person and his journey in music while touching hints and elements from the time period he was known to be most famous for.
