Shanti” this Project is designed by Rinta Pramod, student from Bsc in Interior Design at JD Institute of Fashion Technology, Kochi and celebrates an innovative interior design project on a Palliative Care Centre in Kerala . Shanti” is a peaceful and healing space designed as a palliative care center in Kerala. The name “Shanti” means peace, which reflects the main goal of this project to provide comfort, calm, and dignity to people who are in the final stages of life. The center is not only for patients but also supports their families and caregivers, offering emotional, physical, and mental support in a safe and soothing environment.

The design is deeply inspired by sea waves. Just like waves, life moves in a rhythm sometimes calm, sometimes strong. The form and layout of the space take inspiration from the soft, flowing, and gentle movement of waves. Curved walls, smooth lines, and calming color tones such as sea blue, soft green, beige, and white create a relaxing mood. These elements bring nature inside and help reduce stress and anxiety. The project theme, “Pause,” is not about stopping but about slowing down, clearing the mind, and doing things differently. It reminds both the users and the designers to create moments of reflection, freedom, and peace in a fast-moving world.

The center will mainly serve elderly patients, adults, and even young people who are facing life-limiting illnesses. Most users come from middle-income families across Kerala. Their needs include quiet spaces, emotional support, spiritual care, medical treatment, and family-friendly areas. At the core of “Shanti” is the idea of “Pause” not simply a break, but a chance to change the way we think, to clear our minds, and to breathe more deeply. In a busy world, pause means stepping away from stress and finding a new perspective. Here, pause is built into the very layout and function of the center. Hallways curve gently rather than rushing straight on, encouraging slow, careful steps. Patient rooms are private, warm, and filled with natural light so that each person feels seen, safe, and respected. Family lounges offer soft seating and open views of gardens, giving loved ones their own space to pause together and share quiet moments. Reflection corners, small nooks with a single chair, soft lighting, and a view of greenery or water invite anyone to sit, breathe, and reflect for a while.
The design also supports accessibility and flow. Wide, smooth paths ensure wheelchairs move easily. Controls for lights, temperature, and curtains are placed within reach, giving patients small moments of control. Sustainable choices, solar panels, rainwater collection, and natural ventilation remind us that caring for people and caring for the earth go hand in hand. Every detail in “Shanti” is meant to slow down time, to help the mind find stillness, and to bring comfort in both simple and profound ways. In this space, pause becomes an act of healing, allowing each person to connect with themselves, with others, and with the steady calm of the sea.
Natural materials such as wood, cotton, are used to give warmth and connection to nature. Sustainability is important so the design includes solar panels, large windows for natural light, and proper airflow to keep the space fresh and healthy.
The biggest challenge is balancing emotions, privacy, hygiene, and functionality. But the final aim is to create a calm, respectful, and healing environment where patients feel cared for and families feel supported. “Shanti” will be a space full of warmth, love, and peaceful energy, a true home for the final journey of life.
