Threaded Tales: A Tribute to Motilal Shaw, an artisan from West Bengal

Threaded Tales was designed by Tanusree Mandal, Putha Lekhana Reddy, Amulya P and Shwetha A, students of MSc. in Fashion Design and Management at JD School of Design powered by JD Institute of Fashion Technology, Bengaluru for JD Design Awards 2023. Through their work they paid tribute to Mr. Motilal Shaw, a Kantha artist from West Bengal. The art comprises of the simplest stitch or in the language of embroidery known as the running stitch. It was the way in which the stitch was used, in different arrangements, that forms the complex vocabulary of Kantha. The garments include party wear with recycled fabric of printed motifs and Kantha embroidery. Over the patches of the printed cloth, the designers have incorporated running stitches.
