Headdresses have been always a part of various cultures which then seeped into fashion, symbolizing power, authority and later as an accessory since ancient civilizations to middle ages and then to 21st century. Students of JD Institute of Fashion Technology, Cochin, created beautiful pieces of head gear by transforming their own ideas into beautiful piece of art in the form of a headdress. They used different mediums like fabrics, metal wires, safety pins, dry flowers, form sheets, fabric laces, handmade fabric flowers. Students experimented with draping techniques and craft ideas to bring the best out of it. They styled these on their friends and on their head as well. Photoshoots for the same were conducted inside the campus.
The theme of their inspirations for the headdresses included:-
Fly high: All our dreams are restricted by the society we live in. It is time to break all barriers and fly high and higher, like a bird and live our life to fullest. Move out of the comfort zone, fulfill your dreams and let world accept you with its arms wide open.
Rosette hair bow: Delivering the gift of grace and elegance, Rosette hair bow indicates the cheerfulness a person carry when holding a rose.
Tress Bun and Braided blush: Draping exploration from the existing turban styles.
Bohemian Chic: Style inspired from various bohemian and hippie influences, includes the classic and timeless fashion essentials. The wide variety of boho clothing and accessories make the style an actual phenomenon, one that follows the lines of effortless, relaxed fashion, with its loose-fitted clothing items, casual accessories and overall artistic, creative mishmash of elements.
Pehran Scarf: Inspired from the rich culture of Kashmiri headdress, creatively replacing the heavy jewelry with fabric lace and safety pins.
Morpho admiral hair bow: Butterflies are yet another beautiful creation. Using draping techniques, this hair bow is inspired from butterfly folds and shape.
Headdresses or Headgear making was a fun activity that helped students acquaint themselves with different types of head accessories from different cultures for their research. The activity helped students channelize their creativity to come up with visually aesthetic pieces and was a great learning outlet for them as well.
