JD Annual Design Awards 2016 – Untold Stories : “OPUN MOHN”
Nagaland, a state known for its weaving community – mostly comprised of women, is known for its unique fabric called the “Naga Shawls”. The shawls are a symbol of their rich weaving culture and heritage. Unlike contemporary fabrics, these shawls are small naturally dyed hand-woven fabrics that need to be sewn together to create desired garments. The tiny intricate embroideries on these fabrics are created using porcupine needles. Inspired by the work of the weavers Toshi and Yibeni, the collection “OPUN MOHN”, makes use of this fabric, balanced with subtle use of corduroy to create an evening wear collection designed for the Auckland woman. The collection dominated by colours of red, black and white is presented by Pratheeksha, Khushbu, Eyingbeni and Kabi from February 2015 batch.
