JEDIIIANS for a Cause – Observing World Cancer Day
Every Institute or college should cultivate students in giving back to the society in some way, apart from educating them. World Cancer Day is observed every year on 4th February, a day to raise awareness, prevention by detection of this deadly disease, nothing better when the awareness is done by the youth of today. The world cancer day is an initiative by UICC (the union for International cancer support) and their aim is to reduce death and illness caused by cancer by 2020. One of the main fortes of JD Institute of Fashion Technology is making the JEDIIIANS involve in these kinds of social activities. The curriculum is designed to make sure that the students of fashion and lifestyle courses also pay back to the society.
As a part of the Cancer Awareness day programme, the fashion design course students along with Interior design course students collaborated with the Oncology department of General Hospital, Ernakulam for conducting art and craft activities for Cancer patients.
The activities included Embroidery/surface ornamentation techniques, Paper & bead jewellery making, Paper bags, Pop up greeting cards, Dress forms displaying various ways for draping stoles for breast cancer survivors. The JD Students and Faculty interacted with cancer patients, doctors and nursing students, taught them how to make these products and displayed their works and assignments alongside. The hospital stated that these kinds of events often help the patients to take their mind away for a day and make them bit light-minded.
The programme received a great response from the crowd and the patients expressed their gratitude for the effort taken by our students. Let’s make sure we support this kind of causes and awareness programs which help us to become better citizens of the world, a way to give back to the world. Hopefully, we will be able to collaborate for more awareness and activities in future.
