For the JD Design Awards 2022, designer Ashna Shajahan & Ayra Syed researched a collection that was inspired from the technique of upcycling and it aims to bring back the equilibrium of the world which got disrupted by human interference, one of the major causes being the fashion industry. To Make peace with the pieces of passed-downs and turn them into pieces of art.
The process of converting waste materials or useless products into new products with a higher environmental value is known as upcycling… This trend is a result of the recession, but it is also aided by the current trend toward sustainable thinking.
Through the idea of “peace by piece,” the technique implied is adding various fabrics to form a full outfit. Which is solely a component of sustainability since we are all aware that massive amounts of textile waste are produced each year, and that the same waste can be produced in order to make a garment. Designers in this area have sourced textile waste from a variety of tailors or production companies and upcycled those scrap textiles into lovely dresses .
