Students of Advanced Diploma in Fashion Design and Diploma in Fashion Design from JD Institute of Fashion Technology, Cochin received an opportunity to attend a talk session on sustainable living held at Ente Bhoomi on 3rd March 2020. The session was presided by Mr. Rupesh Kumar K, coordinator for State Tourism and Mr Sabanayaham P, Founder and CEO of Kaikolar at Handloom Utsav by Ente Bhoomi. The speakers guided the attendees on sustainable living with an emphasis on sustainable tourism, sustainable clothing and livelihood.
The venue for the talk session was befitting as Ente Bhoomi, is Cochin’s first green lifestyle mall at Valanjambalam started on 13th July, 2015, which is a multi-floored building made of bamboo, coir, jute and similar carbon-neutral sources. It is an eco-friendly versatile space for business, educational and recreational events in the heart of Cochin city.
JD Institute of Fashion Technology have been the frontrunners in advocating sustainability to its students, and have encouraged them to incorporate the same in their assignments and work. The session by industry experts provided the much needed insights in aspects that encompassed the fashion and interior sectors along with tourism and livelihood that everyone can imbibe. The students were able to identify fabrics more comfortable than handlooms in Kerala for the summer.
The session made the students understand the importance of handwoven fabric, eco-friendly fashion, the different types of natural dyes that can be extracted and the natural dye process used. They were also shown a demo on how fabrics are handwoven and how natural dyes are extracted. There was also a talk session about cotton fabric being made using Charkha spun yarns. It was a useful session as the next generation are the ones to make a revolutionary step towards a sustainable fashion.
