Curly Hair Routines: Shampooing and conditioning are the most important steps to achieving luscious curls

When it comes to cleaning the hair, it is important to not overdo it. Curly hair often tends to get drier and rougher quicker than most hair types. Reason being, that curly hair requires a lot of moisture and when not given the hydration, it will get dry and rough leaving an unpleasant hair texture. Thus it is important to make sure to not use shampoos with high content of sulfate and parabens.

Always make sure that your shampoo is diluted and not added onto the scalp directly as this will also result in dry scalp and hair damage. ‘Less is more’ is the perfect way to put this tip in place. While shampooing the hair, make sure to spread the lather towards the ends of the hair and not use a new squeeze of the shampoo. After shampoo, it is a must to condition your hair. It is also not recommended to shampoo more than twice a week, as this will leave the hair dehydrated.

Conditioner helps restore the moisture that is removed when shampooing the hair. It also helps define the curls leaving them smooth and luscious. When conditioning your hair, you can also comb it, gently detangling all the tangled hair, post which using the palm of your hands, scrunch the hair to leave in a bit of curl. Let the conditioner sit for about a minute or two and rinse it off.

Curly Hair Routines: Microfibre towel. Curl Cream. Scrunch.

This step is one of the most important steps of curly hair care routines. Once the hair is washed, using a cotton t-shirt or mirco-fibre towel, in the same way you scrunch the hair, use a towel to squeeze out the excess water. The reason a cotton t-shirt or microfiber towel is used is because it is much more gentle on the hair than our regular towel.

Once you have taken out the excess water from the hair, use a hair curling cream. Hair curl creams are jam packed with moisture contents that will leave your hair shining and glamorous with curls once dried. When it comes to curl creams, they can be a bit expensive and sometimes the chemicals used may not suit every hair texture. This is where your DIY miracle curl cream comes in. Depending on the thickness and length of the hair, take the required amount of cream onto the palm of your hands, rub them warm and then gently slide your fingers with the product onto the hair. Focus more on the ends and dry areas of the hair. You can also combine combing and scrunching of the hair during the application of the curl cream.

Curly Hair Routines: Using a diffuser will add volume to your curls and define it.

Once the above steps are complete, it comes to the final part of the haircare routine, which is drying your hair. For drying your hair, there are the two basic ways:

  1. Using the hair dryer with the diffuser nozzle;
  2. Air drying

Using a diffuser and drying your hair would be the first option, especially when running late for work or college. But by doing so, you would be intentionally damaging the hair. Using a hair dryer may damage the hair, but using a hair dryer with the cooling button and heat setting will not cause as much damage.

Air drying is something that one can choose when given the leisure of time. By air drying your hair, you are not only avoiding hair damage but are also providing the body with vitamin D. Especially when the hair is dried in the traditional Indian method of sitting in the balcony or terrace below the sun. This will also give an extra shine to the hair.
