LAPIS LAZULI – CURATOR – JDADA2019

“Inorder to be irreplaceable, one must always be different”
—- COCO CHANEL —-

Designers Khushbu Bharti and Shobha M’s collection “Lapis Lazuli” means blue stone. The collection integrates the blue pottery of Jaipur and the technique used on Roman mosaics.

The “blue pottery” of Jaipur gets its name from the cobalt blue dye, used to colour the pottery. However, once the pottery breaks it loses its value and the pieces are then discarded. On one hand wherein broken pieces are discarded, the mosaics in Rome are created using pieces such as cubes of stone, ceramic, or glass to form intricate, colorful designs. Pottery has always been associated with home décor and mosaics are used on the streets, walls, ceilings of cathedrals or coffee tables. The garments of the collection are an amalgamation of the blue pottery and the mosaic technique. The designers, have innovated the use of the broken blue pottery and used the roman mosaic technique to create embellishments onto the garments.

The designers have used sustainable fabrics like jute and linen blends along with mustard, indigo, golden and silver jute. They have used blue pottery waste for embellishments. The designers have given a new life to broken pottery scraps by incorporating it into clothing as embellishments.
