ORGANIC AND NATURAL BEAUTY PRODUCTS: THE DIFFERENCE?

Organic and Natural beauty products are being launched every day. But of late, there have been numerous conversations around clean beauty which essentially involves using beauty products that do not contain toxic ingredients like sulphate, parabens and phthalates. This makes it important to understand the difference between the two. Doing so, not only makes one aware of the eco-friendly ingredients but also their efficacy, which are the two most important factors to consider before buying any beauty product.

Natural beauty products are formulated with eco-friendly ingredients that originate naturally or are taken from natural substances such as plants, marine, micro-organisms, fungi, bacteria, or animals. However the term ‘natural’, is not regulated in the beauty industry. Though a product that contains ‘natural’ and ‘all-natural’ ingredients is good, it may lack the regulation which makes it difficult to identify. Adding to that, it is highly likely that when a product claims to be natural, it may not be so unless it has a recognized certification body on the label.

Natural beauty products should not have toxic ingredients such as sulphate (SLS/SLES), silicone (dimethicone, cyclomethicone, etc), parabens, phthalates, BHT, DMDM, mineral oil, petroleum by-products etc.

Organic beauty products are made using eco-friendly ingredients that are grown through organic farming methods with no use of pesticides, genetic modification of organisms or synthetic fertilizers. Similar to natural beauty products it doesn’t contain any artificial colour, artificial fragrance or chemicals like sulphate, parabens, and silicones. However, the term organic is not unregulated and has independent certification bodies that exist which provide ingredients and product organic certification. Not all products with the word ‘Organic’ means it is organic, look for COSMOS/ ECO-certified, USDA Certified Organic. Adding to that, a product label with the organic certified seal is made with at least 70 percent of certified ingredients.

Organic and natural beauty products are not only good for your skin but also help in sustaining our environment. These products are packed in circular containers that can be reused for multiple purposes. There are many Organic and Natural beauty products in India that are affordable and do not compromise in quality. Including organic and natural beauty products in your skincare or makeup routine, is a step closer to a sustainable lifestyle. At JD Institute, the Makeup Artistry Course encourages every student to try and experiment with beauty products that contain eco-friendly ingredients. Everyone who chooses eco-friendly and sustainable lifestyle, is an ambassador of our environment.
