TRIBAL BEAT – CURATOR – JDADA2019
“I am not a stop along the way, I am a destination.”
—- BLAIR WALDORF —-
Designers Yashica Ramesh and P Harshitha Reddy’s collection “Tribal Beat” has been inspired by the horses of the Pithora art form. This art is practised in by the Rathva Adivasis from the Chhota Udaipur district in Gujarat.
Pithora is a ritualistic practise of painting performed to thank God or to ask for a wish. These are painted on the inner walls of the house and are ideally done after consultation with the head priest of the tribe. Among the many dying art forms, Pithora art is one of them and the designers through their collection wanted to draw awareness to the art form.
The designers were inspired by the horses of Baba Ganesh, Rani Kajal, Vadiya Vaniya, Baba Ind, Baba Pithora, Rani Pithori, Baba Hundol, Rani Makhal, Kanhari, Kaida Kunbhi, Dhaneri, Jahu Valen, and Huta Valen, deities worshipped by the Rathvas. The horse motifs have been incorporated in the collection through two forms of embroidery – double running stitch and knotted work. The garments of the collection have been created from cotton fabric, as it is breathable and a natural fibre making it a comfortable to wear. The colours used for the collection are pearl white, tangerine and marigold.
The designers through their collection want to enable the revival of the Pithora art form, to provide recognition and employment opportunities for the tribes.
