The design spectrum is witnessing a parallel and unique evolution. The combination of Biotechnology and Artificial Intelligence is taking design to a new phase.
Dutch Designer, Joris Laarman, is part of a wave of new age designers who combines Naturalistic and Futuristic ideas in his designs. The emphasis is on experimentation and the use of physics and biology as an inspiration for the designs. The furniture is designed using mathematical principles of nature and algorithms drawn from plants or multi-cellular organisms etc. The algorithms are designed by using 3D printers and the pieces are finished by using high-tech methods by binding the exteriors using Nickel, Copper or steel. Their work has a tension between ornamentation and function, and between technology and traditional craftsmanship.sd
Some of their works which are mainly furniture, tend to be curvy and in an organic form resembling the various stages of life forms that have table legs and chair arms sprouted from them.
Laarman and his team of computer scientists, engineers and craftsmen seek inspiration from the past, which are reminiscent of Art Nouveau or even Rococo. These designs have been exhibited at the US Museum, Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, solely devoted to the experimental and futuristic designs by the Dutch Design studio Joris Laarman Lab. The picture below is one of the futuristic and creative Bridge Tables from the Laarman Lab.
Futuristic design through use of emerging technologies leads to ingenious pieces that provide a visual language of the future. Design in the changing times needs to be ever-evolving and embrace the interplay of technology with craftsmanship.
