From Classroom to Storefront: My Journey from JD Institute to H&M

By Varshini Loganathan – Visual Merchandiser, H&M Bangalore

When I first walked into the JD Institute of Fashion Technology, Bangalore, I was excited but also unsure of where this journey would take me. I had a passion for fashion, but I didn’t yet understand how that passion could shape a career. Today, I work as a Visual Merchandiser at H&M in Bangalore, and looking back, I know that JD Institute played a major role in getting me here.

I pursued the Diploma in Fashion Design, and from day one, I found myself immersed in a world of creativity, structure, and constant learning. What stood out to me was how supportive and encouraging the faculty were. They didn’t just teach — they mentored, listened, and truly believed in our potential. That kind of environment makes all the difference when you’re learning to believe in yourself, too.

The curriculum was another highlight — structured, thorough, and very much aligned with what the fashion industry demands. I was able to develop not just technical design skills, but also an understanding of trends, styling, retail, and more. The course didn’t just train me — it transformed me, both personally and professionally.

One of the best parts? The numerous opportunities JD Institute offered us to showcase our talent, from student exhibitions to styling contests. Each of these experiences built my confidence and gave me real-world exposure.

Working at H&M now, I apply everything I learned — whether it’s colour coordination, trend forecasting, or creating eye-catching displays. And every time I design a storefront that draws someone in, I think back to JD with a smile.

If you’re dreaming of a career in fashion, this is where you start.
