Hotaru which means Firefly in Japanese is a collection that celebrates the life and beauty of the species. The collection is designed by promising designers Netraa Ezhil, Amanda D’Cruz and Hemala Bala Murugan of JD Institute of Fashion Technology, Bangalore who are pursuing their Diploma in Fashion Design.
“There are more than 2000 varieties of fireflies known to mankind, out of which the majority of the species have become extinct, and the collection emphasises raising awareness and making a statement,” said the designer Netraa.
Hotaru collection caters to audiences who are in their early 20s to 35 years old and is the perfect wear for various occasions and red carpet events. It is a Spring-Summer wearable collection designed based on the theme Sync with Nature for the JD Design Awards 2022.
The garments were made using Soya Fabric and FSC Fabrics following a sustainable path. The colours used in the silhouettes are blue, yellow, and orange which were dyed using natural dyes. Radium green threads were used in the embroidery in the pattern of the wing of the firefly which complimented well with the other colours used in the collection. Truffles and Buffalo Puffs were also incorporated into the garments as well as the sheer transparent fabric was used to highlight the anatomy of the fireflies in one of the garments of the collection.
The designers had made a handmade toile in a few of the garments which looked stunning and was a pleasing sight to behold. All their efforts and hard work that they had put into the collection was visible and were one of the favourites of the audience at JD Design Awards 2022.
