1.11 - 1 - ‘RAHUL MISHRA’, the Master of his own fate

‘‘There is no chance, no fate , no destiny that can circumvent or hinder or control the firm resolve of a determined soul” – Ella Wheeler Wilcox

People from small villages and towns dream big because dreaming big doesn’t cost them a fortune. They find passion and determination to strive for what they dream about. Such is the story of this Indian fashion designer : Rahul Mishra. From a small village in Kanpur untouched by fashion, Rahul is the first Non-European to make it to Istituto Marangoni, a renowned fashion school in Milan, with a full scholarship. Enrolling for a fashion course in National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad was a case of luck by chance for him. NID was also the launch pad for his debut at the “GenNext” show at the Mumbai Fashion Week in 2006. The dresses and trousers were made from Kerala handloom fabric and off-white marked the trademark signature colour  for him.

In association with the Bangalore Fashion Week, the students of JD Institute of Fashion Technology showcased a spectacular display chronicling 10 defining milestones in the history of fashion right from the 1700s to the present age. Beginning from Marie Antoinette, through Coco Chanel in the 1920s and to the present rage of Eco Fashion, the humble sewing machine has evolved over the ages.

The students decided to create a garment using the ancient art of Origami, often associated with paper sculptures and designs made from ordinary pieces of paper, serving to give a futuristic appeal to the installation. The students worked laboriously for days to create hundreds of origami pieces to convey the gradual yet bold transition from the world of black and white to riotous colors in the field of fashion.

In this diverse yet united land of India, culture is vast and so are our tastes. We got to fetch ourselves a bite of this country’s rich heritage at the recently held Dastkar fair. Knowledgeable to say the least, the fair was colourful, full of fun things to do, live music, folk dance performances, munching and a platform to get acquainted with all the states that make us one. From the northernmost tip of Kashmir to the very eastern state of Manipur, from Gujarat’s and Rajasthan’s vibrancy to the tribes of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, we saw it all. Everyone was there to commercialize and interact with those from other states.

Hence the inspiration behind the collection was to design futuristic and textured garments. The aim was to design garments using a technique that is still at its nascent stage. Hence the team zeroed in upon fabric manipulation. Fabric manipulation is a technique of creating shapes and patterns out of fabrics. This often makes the fabric more 3D-like and not flat.

Titled “Buried in Fashion”, the collection evokes a question - “What should we wear when we die?” Every day we take time to dress and present ourselves in the best way according to our taste and style. But when we pass on, we are simply wrapped in a plain cloth and buried.

India is a place of many cultures and when you get to see them play on one ramp in one week, it’s a treat for the eyes. Lakme Fashion Week had everything, from the playful candy color saga to prints that you would love to own, from sarees given a raw twist to colours like nudes and silvers being majorly adopted. Let’s look at some of the trends we spotted at LFW:
