As a proud alumnus of JD School of Design and founder of Rahi Design Studio, I often think back to the advice I wish I had when I was starting. The design industry is exciting but tough, and the right mindset makes all the difference. Here are five lessons that have shaped my journey:
- Fact-check everything. Whether it’s a fabric spec, cultural detail, or construction dimension, accuracy matters. It shows professionalism and saves time.
- Build a killer portfolio. This is your voice before you even speak. Showcase only your best work, and make sure it reflects who you are as a designer.
- Master your tools. Being creative isn’t enough. You need software skills — from CAD to Photoshop — to bring your vision to life and work efficiently.
- Do your homework. Before applying to a company, research their style, values, and recent work. It helps you tailor your pitch and shows genuine interest.
- Find your signature style. This is your design fingerprint. Don’t be afraid to experiment until you discover what makes your work stand out.
Design is a mix of passion, perseverance, and professionalism. There’s no shortcut — just your path. Be curious, stay humble, and never stop learning.
