Advice from Experience: My 5 Tips for Aspiring Designers — by Ruder D

As a proud alumnus of JD School of Design and founder of Rahi Design Studio, I often think back to the advice I wish I had when I was starting. The design industry is exciting but tough, and the right mindset makes all the difference. Here are five lessons that have shaped my journey:

  1. Fact-check everything. Whether it’s a fabric spec, cultural detail, or construction dimension, accuracy matters. It shows professionalism and saves time.
  2. Build a killer portfolio. This is your voice before you even speak. Showcase only your best work, and make sure it reflects who you are as a designer.
  3. Master your tools. Being creative isn’t enough. You need software skills — from CAD to Photoshop — to bring your vision to life and work efficiently.
  4. Do your homework. Before applying to a company, research their style, values, and recent work. It helps you tailor your pitch and shows genuine interest.
  5. Find your signature style. This is your design fingerprint. Don’t be afraid to experiment until you discover what makes your work stand out.

Design is a mix of passion, perseverance, and professionalism. There’s no shortcut — just your path. Be curious, stay humble, and never stop learning.
