Designing for Health: Empowering Awareness Through the Pinktober Talk Show

By JD Institute of Fashion Technology | In Association with HCG Cancer Centres

At JD Institute of Fashion Technology, we don’t think about design being just about clothing and images—about influencing minds, igniting conversations, and creating impact in the world. This October, we were honoured to partner with HCG Cancer Centres to organise a Breast Cancer Awareness Talk Show as a part of the international Pinktober campaign.

While our foundation is creativity, consciousness is just as important. The talk show was a move toward bringing these values together, inviting the medical expertise onto our design campus to create conversations that count.

In this joint effort, it was our privilege to welcome two of the world’s most highly respected medical doctors, Dr. Pi and Dr. Sudhakar from HCG Hospitals. Renowned globally for their expertise in oncology, they were not just armed with medical information but with stories, statistics, and strategies to impart life-saving knowledge to our students.

Their gathering was a confluence of two seemingly different yet fundamental worlds of medicine and design coming together for the service of one shared purpose: awareness.

The session was aimed at de-mystifying breast cancer, illuminating all phases from early detection to prevention, and inspiring an active mindset toward health.

Self-Detection Techniques: The students were guided through experiential self-examination methods—a clean but powerful aid in the identification of early warning signals.

Routine Diagnostic Tests: Physicians described routine tests utilised in diagnosing, still demystifying what is perceived by many as frightening tests.

Prevention Strategies: Students learned about genetic reasons for what influences and to what degree a person’s choice of living determines risk, thereby learning how to avoid it and which factors contribute to it.

Guidelines for Screening: Of much significance was how and when screenings must be performed, highlighting the necessity for regular checks at various stages of age.

The speech highlighted knowledge as empowerment, and specifically for students who can disseminate this consciousness to their families, communities, and futures.

When our students are immersed in creativity and fashion daily, they are reminded one time that wellness is at the core. A vision for design will survive best when there is emotional and physical well-being to back it up.

We were heartened to see students listening intently, questioning, and debating for a cause that affects millions of people worldwide. The mood was questioning and empathetic—two causes we believe in at JD. Pinktober comes every year, but the awareness that comes with it should be for a lifetime. At JD Institute, we believe in holistic learning, where wellness, empathy, and empowerment are on the agenda.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to HCG Cancer Centres for joining us in this mission and to our students for embracing the talk with open minds and open hearts.

Because in the world we’re designing, awareness is always in style.
