Empowering Students Through In-House Research Activation by Darakhshn Khan

Innovation at JD Institute of Fashion Technology is not something we talk about—it’s something we do. We recently took a giant leap in that direction by introducing a Research Activation on in-house product development. This was not another chalkboard exercise—it was a live, real-life design problem that forced our students to contribute to something real, something that could go from class to consumer.

The assignment was straightforward: to find information, ideas, and fresh feedback on a fresh digital product being developed right here at JD Institute. But more than the product itself, this project was aimed at achieving an even higher goal—bridging the rift between education and industry practice.

Students from different streams of study were chosen to be part of it, and the new solutions we were discussing were so rich in insight. With the diversity of backgrounds, some discussions and opinions were lively and highly reflective.

What impressed us the most was the degree of enthusiasm and commitment by the students. They did not treat the challenge as a student but as a designer, thinker, and co-creator. Their critiques were insightful, their concepts innovative, and their energy contagious.

From intense wireframes to lovely UI sketches, students demonstrated technical competence as much as intuitive craftsmanship.

Utilising Adobe Illustrator as their primary software, they implemented web design concepts with extremely high accuracy, demonstrating just how easily learning in the classroom can be converted into industry-qualified skillsets.

The innovative concepts varied from exceptional user interface designs to creative, “out-of-the-box” design solutions, each contributing value to the development process.

As organisers, we were genuinely surprised—not just at how quickly students were grasping the intricacies of the design challenge, but also at how enthusiastically they were itching to plug in and contribute to a product that could potentially be folded into JD Institute’s virtual space. The reality-check factor was what gave this activation its edge. This wasn’t abstract; it was an ongoing project. They observed firsthand what it means to participate in the process of design development—research and ideation, prototyping and feedback loops. They learned to work cross-disciplinary, share and receive critique, and consider strategically user needs and product capabilities.

And of course, for all their trouble, they went home not merely with certificates, but with an attitude of pride, ownership, and self-trust in the work they accomplished.

This research activation wasn’t just an event—it was a move towards JD Institute’s vision of moulding creatives who are innovative as well as industry-inclined. It was a testament to the fact that if they are provided with the platform and the inclination, students not only rise to meet the challenge, but surpass it, to lead.

As we build our product in-house further, we are taking with us the learning, imagination, and culture of togetherness that our students bring to the table. Because at JD Institute, we don’t teach design—we create the future.
