By Neha Kukreja – BSc in Fashion Design Graduate
When I first joined JD Institute, I didn’t know where my passion for fashion would take me. What I did know, though, was that I was eager to learn, explore, and transform my creativity into something real. Looking back at my journey, I can proudly say that JD Institute didn’t just teach me design — it transformed me into a designer with a vision.
I remember the first day like it was yesterday. The environment was both exciting and intimidating. I came from a place where I loved fashion but wasn’t entirely confident in my abilities. But JD Institute’s faculty and immersive curriculum instantly made me feel at home. The personalised approach to teaching, paired with the incredible mentorship, allowed me to explore the depth of fashion design in ways I hadn’t imagined before.
The most transformative experience for me was the JD Design Awards. The theme for the year was “Future Fiction,” and I honestly had no clue where to start. The idea of conceptualising a collection based on such an abstract theme was daunting. But with constant encouragement from my mentors and a clear focus, I pushed through. I started experimenting with sustainable design practices and materials, which became the heart of my collection. The process of refining and reworking my ideas taught me resilience and patience. It wasn’t just about the end product; the journey of creation was just as valuable.
Throughout my time at JD Institute, the emphasis on hands-on experience and learning from real-world projects prepared me for the industry. I was involved in everything — from concept development to working with fabrics, sketching, and bringing my designs to life. This holistic approach helped me develop not only my technical skills but also my creative thinking.
What JD Institute instilled in me was a growth mindset. I learned to embrace challenges, to take constructive criticism, and to view every setback as an opportunity to improve. The importance of teamwork, time management, and continuous learning became clearer with each project and experience. I now look forward to applying these lessons as I step into the professional world.
JD Institute didn’t just give me the tools to be a designer; it helped me discover the kind of designer I want to be. I’m incredibly grateful for the mentors, classmates, and experiences that shaped my journey and will continue to guide me as I move forward in my career.
