Tips on how to take better jewellery photography

Jewellery Photography images can turn sharp, only when one knows how to focus the camera correctly. Digital cameras with auto focus are often difficult to focus accurately while shooting small objects. The owner’s manual needs to be read and understood inorder to operate the camera’s auto focus. Most digital cameras are designed to focus easily on large objects, but have trouble to focus on small objects.  It is often advantageous to put the camera in spot focus mode.  Spot focus will give you more control over what part of a scene the camera is actually focusing on.

The following are some tips to follow for better jewellery photography.

Motion blur is usually caused even if there is a slightest movement. The closer one gets to the object the more obvious the motion blur becomes.  Hence investing in a good and sturdy tripod is essential as it will make a big difference in the sharpness of the images. Also, if the camera has a remote shutter it can be released and then used, if not then the camera’s in-built timer helps to minimize camera shake.

To cover the largest area of the subject in focus, it is good to set the camera in aperture priority mode and set the aperture to the highest number possible. The closer one gets to the subject, the more important this becomes.

The camera’s built-in flash rarely gives good results for jewellery photography.  For soft lighting either shoot outside on an overcase day or use a light tent.

Inexpensive software like Photoshop Elements can also make jewellery photography much easier.  It may seem like it is faster to use an image exactly as it was shot.  However, in reality, it is difficult to shoot an image exactly how you would want it to appear in its final form.  An Image editing software allows you to crop an image, adjust exposure, sharpen the image and then resize it, in less than 60 seconds. The biggest difference between a product image captured by an amateur and a professional is the stark difference in the sharpness and lighting.  Following the aforementioned process for jewellery photography will result in a huge improvement in the quality of the photos.
