Bachelor of Visual Arts (B.V.A.) in Graphic Design is a four-year intensive course offered by the JD Institute of Fashion Technology in Bangalore campus in affiliation with Bengaluru City University. The course enables students to understand the fundamentals of graphic design through exploration of various communication tools with an emphasis on digital techniques. The course follows a pedagogy that encourages creative and critical thinking of the various methodologies that inform the practice of graphic design, encouraging them to challenge and formulate new ways of approach. The course also focuses on the analysis of various historical, cultural and social parameters that influence its practice, and also equips the students with the ability to interpret the politics of the contemporary conditions and how they affect its current practice.

B.V.A. in Graphic Design aims to introduce the students to the versatile and evolving field of graphic design, and equips them with the skill to expand the scope and potential of its practice. The pedagogy of the course follows an innovative and experimental approach that instills confidence in the students to question and challenge the existing and established methodologies of its practice. The course emphasises on the history and the various parameters that affect its practice; the awareness of which helps the students identify influences and question the relevance, responsiveness and significance of their practice. The students are also introduced to the fields of advertising, gaming, user interface design, and various drawing and communication formats. Students also learn the various skills that can be applied to magazine and newspaper publishing, catalogue production and promotional publication design. The course also focuses on developing the entrepreneurial skills in order to enable them to lead a sustained creative practice.

Upon successful completion of the Bachelor of Visual Arts (B.V.A.) in Graphic Design, graduates will be able to:

  • Create effective print and digital communications, and user experiences through the application of theories, tools, and best practices in the field.
  • Exhibit a thoughtful application of the elements and principles of visual design, colour theory, information hierarchy, and typography to successfully communicate narratives, concepts, emotions, and/or identities across a variety of media.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving skills for project planning, design, and creation.
  • Communicate clearly in visual, verbal, and written forms using techniques appropriate for the intended audience.
  • Participate as a team member to make collaborative decisions toward shared objectives with civility, interpersonal skills, and professionalism.
  • Explain how design enhances viewer comprehension in extracting meaning from designed elements.
  • Interpret effects of design on the larger global community.
  • Develop the visual reality for art and design context.
  • Interpret and analyse brief and formulate an appropriate and innovative design process.
  • Comprehend the design philosophy, theories, data collection and analysis and application in a chosen area of study.
